Summary

From the project website:

"DMAOnline is a Jisc funded project which aims to provide a single dashboard view of how various departments contribute to RDM activities and how an institution is performing in terms of its compliance with policies"

From Spotlight Data: Jisc RDS Software Projects

"The project will allow institutions visibility of their RDM efforts and facilitate compliance and planning exercises.

Key project outputs:

  1. Prototype RDM dashboard
  2. Dashboard API
  3. RDM event “Research Data Management – solutions for your needs”"

From a synthesis of the projects in the context of the OAIS model, by Jen Mitcham of the Filling the Digital Preservation Gap project

"DMAOnline’ sits firmly into the Data Management entity of the OAIS, running queries on the functions of the other entities and producing reports. This tool being created by the University of Lancaster will report on the administrative data around research data management systems (including statistics around access, storage and the preservation of that data). Using a tool like this, institutions will be able to monitor their RDM activities at a high level, drill down to see some of the detail and use this information to monitor the uptake of their RDM services or to make an assessment of their level of compliance to funder mandates. From the perspective of the “Filling the Digital Preservation Gap” project we are pleased that the DMAOnline team have agreed to include reporting on the statistics from Archivematica in their phase 3 plans. One of the limitations of Archivematica that was highlighted in the requirements section of our own phase 1 report was the lack of reporting options within the system. A development we have been sponsoring during phase 2 of our project will enable third party systems such as DMAOnline to extract information from Archivematica for reporting purposes.
Much focus in RDM activities typically goes into the Access functional entity, which naturally follows on from viewing a summary of activity through DMAOnline. This is one of the more visible parts of the model - the end product if you like of all the work that goes on behind the scenes."

Potential to enhance

Is there potential to leverage non-preservation focused developments to enhance preservation capabilities?

Awareness across organisations of the status of preservation services and status of how well content has been preserved is typically quite poor. For example, the status of backups, multiple copies and checksum validation is often not widely shared. Despite the importance of these functions they often remain siloed with IT departments leaving those that depend on them uncertain as to their efficacy, until perhaps it is too late and gaps in service are discovered. There is therefore considerable potential for collaboration and join up with preservation services, as has been demonstrated by the Archivematica connection in Phase 2, and discussions with Data Vault. As well as expanding the sources for data for inclusion in DMAOnline, increasing access to more critical preservation focused statistics could have a real impact to empower data curators, although may well require more development work to generate the required statistical data at the preservation service end.

Collaboration

Is there potential for collaboration and/or exploiting existing/parallel work beyond the project consortiums?

Obvious candidates for further collaboration include providers of other repository solutions and services, expanding the coverage of preservation statistics within DMAOnline.

Project website sustainability checklist

A brief checklist ensuring the project work can be understood and reused by others in the future.

Task Score
Clear project summary on one page, hyperlink heavy 1
Project start/end dates 0
Clear licensing details for reuse 0
Clear contact details 2
Source code online and referenced from website 1

2=present, 1=partial, 0=missing

Key recommendations

  • Potential to expand coverage to other repository and/or preservation service providers
  • Potential to expand range of preservation and storage related statistics to break down barriers and empower data curators, for example frequency of checksumming and status of preservation storage.
  • Suggest changes to website: Add licensing details for code and other outputs, project start end/dates and reference source code on Github

An entry for DMAOnline was added to the COPTR registry.
