Welcome to the SPRUCE Book Sprint, July 30th - 2nd August 2013

Aims and Objectives

This is what the business case page on the OPF wiki currently describes as the end results of the SPRUCE business case work:

1. What have you got and what do you need? a.-Assess your digital collections b.-Identify risks and challenges c.-Identify solutions d.-Identify what you need to make the solutions happen, and assess the gaps in your capability

2. A business case toolkit for digital preservation a.-A guide to building a business case including exercises that can help users develop core parts of their own business case b.-Key arguments, wording, benefits and other text for re-use in new business cases

3. Case studies capturing the process, actual business cases and lessons learned from seeking funding for preservation within a number of UK institutions a. Primarily sourced from SPRUCE Award work

4. A set of resources that may be useful in augmenting a business case and making the key arguments a. -For example, materials that illustrate/explain the challenges of digital preservation b. -What is digital preservation c. -Terminology/glossaries

5. Resources focused on the communication aspects of making or delivering the case a. This may take the form of interviews with expert case-makers

This is what we want to realise during the Sprint. In particular we want to draw on the work we’ve done in supporting digital preservation in the Mashups to build some guidance for part (1) above, and build (2) using the business case focused awards (or case studies) we’ve funded and using the business case results and exercises from the Mashups.

  • Develop a structure for the business case toolkit and preservation support pages

  • Develop bullet point summary for each chapter
  • Brainstorm and write in small groups
