Outer OAIS - Inner OIAS for distribution aspects

Although the OAIS Reference Model does briefly discuss interoperability for distributed digital preservation in section 6, it needs to be more explicit in order to be usable for analysis and auditing purposes. The OO-IO model can support the analysis and audit of collaborative arrangements between multiple OAIS’s, where this paper uses OAIS’s as the plural form of an OAIS.

The Outer OAIS (OO) - Inner OIAS (IO) model is described in the paper "Supporting Analysis and Audit of Collaborative OAIS’s by use of an Outer OAIS – Inner OAIS (OO-IO) Model" by Eld Zierau (Digital Preservation Specialist at Royal Danish Library) and Nancy McGovern (Head, Curation and Preservation Services at MIT Libraries) https://fedora.phaidra.univie.ac.at/fedora/get/o:378066/bdef:Content/get (p. 209)presented at iPres 2014 – originally based on the paper "Cross-Institutional Cooperation on a Shared Bit Repository" by Eld Zierau (Digital Preservation Specialist at Royal Danish Library of Denmark) and Ulla Bøgvad Kejser (Preservation Specialist at Royal Danish Library of Denmark) http://bookstore.teriin.org/journal_inside.php?material_id=477&highlight_id=449&ji_id=114&displayLatest=1#449 presented at ICDL 2010 - and further work was carried out in the international working group the Framework for Applying OAIS to Distributed Digital Preservation (DDP) described in paper "Creating a Framework for Applying OAIS to Distributed Digital Preservation" by Eld Zierau (Digital Preservation Specialist at Royal Danish Library of Denmark) and Matthew Schultz (previously at Educopia) http://purl.pt/24107/1/, presented at iPres 2013.
The OO-IO model can support various aspects including:
- Pre-ingest - with an inner OAIS that takes care of the immidiate preservation
- Archival Storage (or rather Preservation Storage) - espcially when describing all aspects of distribution in more organisations/platforms etc. as well as all OAIS aspects of bit preservation
There are more examples in the "Supporting Analysis and Audit of Collaborative OAIS’s by use of an Outer OAIS – Inner OAIS (OO-IO) Model" paper (mentioned above) and there will be more in a paper (in progress) from the same authors.
